Capitol Notebook - March 3, 2010
Voters in Texas made it unmistakably clear how they feel about their right to publicly acknowledge God in their primaries yesterday.
In the course of voting for (or against) nominees for public office, Texas Republicans were presented with a series of ballot questions. Among them, Question 4, stating:
The use of the word “God”, prayers, and the Ten Commandments should be
allowed at public gatherings and public educational institutions, as
well as be permitted on government buildings and property. YES OR NO
The result? 95% YES, 5% NO.
How's that for being clear about where the people in this country stand on questions of religious liberty? I think it's safe to say we have a consensus on this issue...despite what the folks who run radical left organizations like the ACLU and the Alliance for the Separation of Church and State may say.
Even a Center-Right Court Rules No on Ten Commandments
Today, the United States Supreme Court refused to get involved in a lawsuit regarding a Ten Commandments display on public land in Oklahoma. This is a warning to conservatives and to other Americans who believe in religious freedom that elections have consequences.
The fact that a center-right U.S. Supreme Court can refuse to allow a Ten Commandments display on the grounds of a county courthouse in Stigler, Oklahoma is sobering. The additional fact that Barack Obama is quickly filling the federal court vacancies with legislate-from-the-bench left-wingers is truly terrifying.
An 8-foot-tall stone Ten Commandments monument has been on public property since the year 2004. Some atheists, egged on by the ACLU, challenged the monument through a lawsuit and a federal appeals court in 2009 ruled that the Ten Commandments monument was an unconstitutional endorsement of religion by the county commission... WASHINGTON – Winners: Texas Gov. Rick Perry and "tea party" anger. Losers: Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and anybody else tied to Washington.
Take note, House and Senate members up for re-election or running for governor this fall: Your connections to the nation's gridlocked capital — and particularly your votes for the Wall Street bailout — could be debilitating.
Tuesday's GOP primary in the Texas governor's race showed as much.
Texas Republicans sent these messages, Perry said: "Stop messin' with Texas!" and "Quit spending all the money!"
The race pitted the public's fury at Washington against its anti-incumbent fervor. And it turned out that Republican primary voters hated Washington more than they did incumbency. They nixed Hutchison, an indisputable capital insider after 16 Senate years, in favor of keeping Perry — even though he's Texas' longest-serving governor, in his 10th year at the helm.
Perry, who became governor when George W. Bush left office, is seeking an unprecedented third four-year term. He will face Democrat Bill White, the former Houston mayor, this fall in a race that Democrats and Republicans alike expect to be competitive.
Underscoring its belief that White can win, the Democratic Governors Association already has given him $500,000. More is expected to follow as Democrats portray White "as an outsider who can bring people together," according to a DGA memo, and use Perry's long tenure against him.

Glenn Beck says it's still morning in America: a head-pounding, hangover morning. The conservative commentator drew cheers from conservative activists Saturday night in a speech that implored Republicans to renounce profligate ways in Washington, let big banks fail and honor true conservative principles.
Beck was keynote speaker for the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington. The TV and radio host said the GOP should confess its adherence to big government in the way golfer Tiger Woods admitted a problem with women — and show the same remorse.
Democrats didn't get off the hook. Beck called "progressivism" a disease imperiling the morning in America that Ronald Reagan saw as full of promise.

By Newt Gingrich
"If the First Amendment has any force, it prohibits Congress from fining or jailing citizens, or associations of citizens, for simply engaging in political speech."
These are the words of Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing for the majority in a historic Supreme Court decision that began with a man, a movie, and a message that bothered the bureaucratic Washington machine.
In January of 2008, as the Democratic presidential primaries between Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) were raging, filmmaker Dave Bossie set about advertising and distributing his 90-minute documentary "Hillary: The Movie." (Full disclosure: Callista and I host and produce movies with Dave.)
The film offered a critical look at the New York senator then vying for the presidency. But Bossie was stunned when government officials from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) told him the film couldn't be aired or even advertised. Their reason? Sen. Clinton was a candidate for federal office, so Bossie's film was illegal under campaign finance law.
Bossie's production company, Citizens United, sued, claiming its First Amendment right to free speech was being denied by the government. And the Supreme Court decision announced last week was not only a vindication of the free speech rights of all Americans, it was a significant step toward dismantling the incumbent-protecting political machine created by bureaucratic campaign finance "reforms" like McCain-Feingold.
By declaring that government has no business suppressing the political speech of groups like Citizens United, the Supreme Court has begun to make it easier for middle class candidates to take on the rich and the powerful.

I have been crisscrossing the country on my book tour meeting with thousands of voters over the last few weeks and when people mention Congress and the Obama administration to me, they are angry about the out of control spending, frustrated that Congress has turned a deaf ear to their concerns about the health care bill and not surprised that our country is lurching perilously left. https://www.huckpac.com/?Fuseaction=Contribute.Home&DonorCode=StopPelosi
